ISO/IEC 27000:2026 released β€” the foundation of the ISO 27001 family updated

The sixth edition of ISO/IEC 27000 was published on 3 July 2026. It explains the concepts and principles behind information security management systems (ISMS) and how the standards in the ISO/IEC 27000 family relate to one another. The previous international edition was ISO/IEC 27000:2018. A European-designated national adoption, SS-EN ISO/IEC 27000:2026, was subsequently approved in Sweden on 15 July 2026; that date is a national publication detail, not a deadline for UAE organisations.

There is an essential distinction for clients: ISO/IEC 27000:2026 is an overview, not the standard used to certify an ISMS. The current international requirements standard remains ISO/IEC 27001:2022, with its 2024 climate-action amendment. ISO/IEC 27002:2022 remains the published guidance for information security controls. Publication of a new 27000 edition does not, by itself, change existing ISO/IEC 27001 certificates or start a certification transition period.

What does the 2026 edition change?

ISO's description of the sixth edition makes a change of emphasis clear: it concentrates on the overview, concepts, principles and relationships within the ISMS family rather than serving primarily as a terminology document. This helps managers and implementers understand which publication answers which question before they start a security project or interpret an audit requirement.

The roles are easier to keep separate:

  1. ISO/IEC 27000:2026 explains the ISMS landscape and the ideas connecting its standards. It is useful background for people designing or overseeing an ISMS.

  2. ISO/IEC 27001:2022 states the requirements for establishing, operating and improving an ISMS. It is the standard against which an independent certification body audits an organisation.

  3. ISO/IEC 27002:2022 provides guidance on information security controls. It helps teams understand and implement appropriate controls, but is not a replacement for ISO/IEC 27001 requirements.

That distinction matters when a supplier asks for an β€œISO 27000 certificate” or a team reads a headline about β€œISO 27001:2026.” A certificate should identify the actual requirements standard and edition, the certified organisation and scope, and the issuing certification body. As of this article's preparation, ISO lists ISO/IEC 27001:2022 as its current published requirements edition. There is no published international standard called ISO/IEC 27001:2026.

How does this affect risk management and future revisions?

The new overview gives organisations a chance to check that security, compliance and business teams understand the ISMS in the same way. Where an organisation also follows ISO 31000 risk-management guidance, it can compare how enterprise risk and information security risk are described, escalated and reviewed. This is a practical integration exercise, not a new requirement or a formal ISO/IEC 27001 transition. The publicly available ISO overview does not establish a new ISO 31000 obligation for certified organisations.

Future revisions of standards in the family may refer to this updated foundation, but the publication of ISO/IEC 27000:2026 does not announce a date or a changed edition for ISO/IEC 27001 or 27002. Teams should use each standard's currently published edition and watch ISO's official catalogue for any separate revision announcement.

What should ISO 27001 clients in the UAE do now?

  1. Keep your certification references accurate. In tender documents, supplier questionnaires, web pages and certificates, identify the applicable standard as ISO/IEC 27001:2022 where that is what the organisation holds. Do not relabel an existing certificate β€œISO 27001:2026.”

  2. Use the new overview where it helps. ISMS owners, senior managers and new internal auditors can read ISO/IEC 27000:2026 to understand the family's structure. Check any internal training slides or guidance that describe ISO/IEC 27000 chiefly as a vocabulary standard and update them if necessary.

  3. Continue the existing ISMS programme. Maintain risk assessment and treatment, applicable controls, internal audits, management review and the usual certification cycle against ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and its applicable amendment. The 27000 publication alone does not require a new external audit.

  4. Coordinate language across teams. If the organisation has an enterprise risk programme, compare risk reporting and ownership between that programme and the ISMS. Document any useful refinements as ordinary improvement actions, without claiming a new clause or deadline that ISO has not issued.

For UAE organisations building or improving their ISMS, Qdot provides ISO 27001 consultancy and certification-readiness support. An independent certification body conducts the external audit and makes the certification decision.
